Traumatization

What is trauma?

The term “trauma” comes from the Greek and means “injury”. Psychological trauma is a psychological injury or a severe psychological shock caused by an extremely stressful event.

Serious experiences such as violence or natural disasters are very stressful for almost everyone and can lead to extreme stress, helplessness and horror.

If symptoms such as strong emotional fluctuations and severe physical stress occur immediately after the trauma, this is referred to as an acute stress reaction. It usually subsides on its own after a short time.

If the symptoms persist, a post-traumatic stress disorder can develop. This can lead to intense, intrusive memories of the trauma, nightmares, emotional numbing and avoidance behavior.

Early stabilization/therapy is important and should be carried out by a therapeutic specialist. Such events can cause extreme stress and feelings of helplessness and horror.
