Rising case numbers and valuable help

The General Meeting elected a new member of the Board of Directors. The annual report illustrates how the need for victim support is increasing. And how important the services offered by Basel Victim Support are.

The general meeting of the Association for Joint Victim Support in Basel took place on April 27. The 2022 annual financial statements and the 2022 annual report were approved unanimously. The four current Board members Denise Gilli (President), René Broder (Vice President), Corina Schweighauser (Projects) and Fred Surer (Finance) were confirmed in office for a further two years. And Elisa Marti, who has been attending meetings as a guest since August 2022, was warmly welcomed as a new member of the Board of Directors.

Four cases of domestic violence per day
2281 new dossiers/cases were opened in 2022. This corresponds to an increase of 9 % compared to 2021. Over 40% more cases have been registered in the last four years. 47% of the cases concerned domestic violence. This corresponds to four cases of domestic violence per working day.

Together with the open cases from the previous year, a total of 4,773 advisory cases were processed in 2022. Behind each one is a specific situation where someone has experienced violence. And where our experts do everything they can to deal with the consequences of a criminal offense. Through advice, support and referral to other institutions, lawyers or shelters.

Important help for those affected
Victim Support Basel has paid out financial support of CHF 1.8 million to those affected by these cases, as part of the statutory emergency aid and longer-term assistance. These include contributions for psychotherapy, emergency accommodation, lawyers’ fees and translation costs.

Profit and lossalternate
The 2022 annual financial statements close with a surplus.
In the two previous years, this resulted in a significant deficit. This development is related to the performance agreements with the sponsoring cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft. These are each concluded for four years, currently from 2022 to 2025. As the number of cases increases steadily, costs also rise during the four-year period. However, the annual compensation remains constant during this period.

This results in a profit in the first two years of each period (2022 and 2023) and a loss in the following two years (2024 and 2025). Over the four years, this generally leads to a balanced result.
